The Role of Technology and Its Effects on Society

Technology

Technology is the creation, application and integration of knowledge to solve practical problems. It may include tools and machines that are created by mental or physical effort, as well as virtual technologies, such as computer software and business methods.

Definition:

Technological tools, processes and systems help transform the practice of engineering, science, medicine, agriculture, business, and other fields into a cohesive, efficient and productive means of accomplishing tasks. These tools and systems are designed, manufactured, maintained, and deployed by people who must be trained, educated and equipped with the knowledge of how to design, build, maintain and use technology.

Humans use technology to interact with each other and with the natural world in a variety of ways, both positive and negative. Some uses of technology contribute to a more sustainable environment, while others can disrupt existing social hierarchies, cause pollution, or harm individuals or groups.

The relationship between technology and society (culture) is often considered synergistic, symbiotic, co-dependent, and co-influential. It is generally believed that the synergy first occurred at the dawn of human civilization with the invention of simple tools, and continues today with modern technologies.

Society –technology interactions:

The role and impact of technology is ever-growing in both our personal and working lives. Understanding how technology shapes people’s interactions with each other and the natural world is important.

Technology and its effects on society are a major concern for educators, learners, and school leaders. Teachers are in a unique position to provide students with the knowledge they need to thrive in an age of technology.
