The Evolution of Technology

Technology

Technology is the process by which people make advances in science and engineering. It gives scientists the tools they need to study complex systems. It also provides inspiration and direction for research. For example, the problem of increasing the efficiency of commercial steam engines motivated the development of the theory of conservation of energy. And genetic engineering helped to map the locations of genes in the human genome.

However, technology is not without its side effects. Some technologies, which are seemingly beneficial, have undesirable side effects that affect people and society. For instance, refrigerators can have a positive impact on a person’s diet, but they can have a detrimental effect on the food distribution system. Moreover, refrigerators release various gases, which can have significant effects on the earth’s atmosphere.

Technological advancements also affect employment opportunities. People working in the fields that use new technology will experience higher salaries. Meanwhile, people who work in older fields will see their job duties change. Some industries may even lose jobs as a result of new technologies. Regardless, the evolution of technology will always provide opportunities for knowledge advancement.

The key to effective technology education is to develop a balanced perspective of technology. Using PATT questionnaires, educators can find out whether students have a balanced view of technology. For example, they might use the Engineering by Design Program, which aims to promote balanced perceptions of technology. Teaching technology should also focus on core concepts, which are the ‘big ideas’ of technology. These concepts can help students understand the development of the field and provide a context for learning.
